Results of a literature review of published surveys of community perceptions of landscape values in the South Island high country are reported, and a range of survey methods evaluated. The methods include quantitative questionnaires and photo preference surveys; qualitative interviews, focus groups and participant observation; and expert analysis of examples of cultural production, such as paintings. Good-practice benchmarks are identified for each method, and criteria for evaluation of methods presented. Current knowledge is revealed to be fragmented and incomplete.
