Paper contributed to New Zealand Institute of Agricultural Science Symposium "New Zealand Beef Production, Processing and Marketing", Hamilton, August 24-28th 1970.In this paper, the meaning of profitability in the context of future production is defined, and then some present and future profitability levels are calculated for various North Island farm systems. These farm systems are then examined together in a linear programming framework to assess likely future trends in beef production in the North Island and throughout New Zealand
