The main purpose of this paper is to complement other studies of financial market liberalisation in New Zealand that have been published recently. The paper provides a brief summary of the regulatory environments before and after the election of a Labour Government in 1984. Specific aspects of the effects of liberalisation that are discussed include financial deepening, market concentration, profitability, and market structure
