At the time of the photographs, the congregation of more than 250 families had moved into the former Alice E. Sawyer School, after meeting in several Portland area locations such as the Waynflete School, the Etz Chaim Synagogue, and the former Jewish Home for the Aged (158 North Street). Bet Ha\u27am ( The People\u27s House, in Hebrew) built a new extension to the school building in 2009.
