Prions are unique in that disease is initiated when the normal prion protein (PrPC) undergoes a conformational change and propagates through a process of templated conversion to an infectious, misfolded, isoform (PrPRES, PrPCWD, or PrPSc) which can assemble into oligomers and amyloid fibrils.
