Self-dissatisfaction on Anton Chekov's uncle Vanya

This study deals with a literary analysis. It interests the writer it contains human issues. Analyzing a literary work is exploring characters, problems, conflict and values in it. A play can be acted on stage or enjoyed as a literary reading. This helps the writer, as a student, learn to take a point of view, values and improves the mastery of vocabularies, structures of a sentence and stories. The writer chooses a play as his object since it is full with explicit conversation. In this thesis, he chooses Anton Chekov’s play Uncle Vanya, since this play is quite famous and contains burried values. This play had performed on stage successfully. Most of all, Chekov’s way to perform a slight tragic story into a light-comedy form interests the writer. He chooses four characters to be analyzed. They are Ivan Petrovitch Voynitsky, Alexander Vladimirovitch Serebryakov, Mihail Lvovitch Astrov and Sofya Alexandrovna. He leads the analysis with some statements of the problem. They are a question about type of self-dissatisfaction, the cause and the reaction of each character discussed. In conducting an analysis, a person should, at least, read the material for several times. Because of this reason, the writer uses Practical criticism as the approach. This approach concerns with each element of the material, in this case, the play. It is also related to the intrinsic factors; the characters, plot, conflict and the theme, and the extrinsic factors; moral and psychological value. Since the characters have some similarity and difference, the writer in the stages of analysis uses a comparison and some leading questions that facilitate to analyze the play. In the analysis, the writer is drawn by the idea of dissatisfaction deals with the inner-self of some characters, mainly Uncle Vanya. This self-dissatisfaction becomes the focus and starting point to do the analysis. The writer also analyzes the process of self-dissatisfaction in each character and the reaction of each of the character. As the end of the analysis, the writer throws a consideration about Chekov’s work that is said as a humorous work but is filled with an excellent message about life. In the analysis, the writer finds that there are self-dissatisfactions about meaningless life or works, disregard of what someone has done, life in retirement and physical appearance. Realizing the existence of surrounding that is dissatisfying causes all of those. The reactions are varying. There are opposive attitudes to another, anger, false decision making, and self-pittance, showing a low confidence or just getting drunk. Finally, it seems that there is not a perfect way to overcome this situation, however, the person should not stop to struggle or do something instead
