The fundamental purpose of the present paper is to describe, from a critical perspective, the issue of follow-up or academic tutorial advising on degree or thesis work programs of the university and its impact on the production of knowledge. In order to achieve this purpose, a diagnosis was accomplished to the tutorial process professors perform with their academics in the development of research, at the same time it identifies roles and functions the tutor must assume.
