Document: News fom the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, Winter - 1966, page 10-3- The Board has awarded two contracts for construction of sections of the Second Lower Feeder. The first, in the amount of $8,112,554, was awarded in April to Baker-Anderson Corp., of Santa Ana, for construction of the first section of the Second Lower Feeder, which will eventually extend from the filtration plant near Yorba Linda to the existing Palos Verdes Reservoir, and serve much of Orange and southern Los Angeles counties. This eight-mile-long pipeline will extend from Anaheim to Long Beach. In October, the Board awarded another contract in the amount of $7,887,230 to Baker-Anderson Corp. and Shaffer Tool Works, a joint venture, for construction of a second section of the Second Lower Feeder. This nine-mile-long pipeline will be constructed in the City of Anaheim and in unincorporated territory in Orange County. It will extend from Carbon Creek Channel to Dale Avenue. Contract Volume Grows In June, the Board awarded a contract in the amount of $30,773,630, largest in District history, for tunnel construction between Newhall and the San Fernando Valley. This work will include the Newhall Tunnel, 31/2 miles long and 201/2 feet in diameter, and the Balboa Inlet Tunnel, one mile long and 14 feet in diameter. The low bid was submitted by a joint venture consisting of the L. E. Dixon Company, The Arundel Corporation, MacDonald & Kruse, Inc., and Peter Kiewit Sons' Co. These tunnels will also be a part of the Foothill Feeder. In July, a contract in the amount of $9,281,790 was awarded to Peter Kiewit Sons' Co. for expansion of the Robert B. Diemer Filtration Plant in Orange County. The expansion will double the plant's output from 200 million gallons a day to 400 mgd.
