Dominy, Commissioner of Reclamation, Before the Subcommittee on Irrigation & Reclamation, Committee on Interior & Insular Affairs, U.S. Senate on S. 1658, page 21through the provision of terminal storage at Maxwell reservoir, which would be located at the junction of the Salt and Verde Rivers about 3 miles upstream from the Salt River Project's Granite Reef diversion dam. A flat-grade canal, extending from Granite Reef Dam to a combination power and pumping plant at Maxwell Dam, would provide for this integration. Most of the time, water demands in the Salt River Project, area would be met by combining flows from Granite Reef aqudeuct with flows released from Maxwell reservoir through the powerplant. However, when the flow through the Granite Reef aqueduct exceeds the demand on the system, the excess Colorado River water would flow towards Maxwell Dam where it would be pumped into storage until needed. In addition to Bridge Canyon and Maxwell Dams, three other dams would be included in the project to conserve and regulate the local water supplies. These would be Buttes Dam, located on the Gila River about 14 miles upstream from the town of Florence, Arizona; Charleston Dam on the San Pedro River southeast of Tucson; and Hooker Dam on the main stem of the Gila River in western New Mexico. The project plan contemplates the construction of a high voltage transmission system which would make possible the delivery of power and energy to project pumps, the sale of commercial power and energy at load centers, and the integration of operations at Bridge Canyon with other plants on the Colorado River for maximum utilization of the hydroelectric power potential. 21Epson Perfection 4870 Photo, 400 dpi, 8 bit, 963,953 byte
