The powerplant and transformers would be located underground near the left abutment of the dam. The switchyards would be located nearly 10 miles south of the canyon rim near the construction townsite. As for the backbone canal system, the water would be pumped from Lake Havasu by three in-series pumping plants having a total static lift of 969 feet. The Granite Reef aqueduct would extend 219 miles from Lake Havasu to Granite Reef Dam. It would have a capacity of 1,800 c.f.s., and would be concrete lined. Due to urban expansion which has occurred north of Phoenix since 1947, the original canal location through this area would be imprudent. An additional pumping plant was therefore installed on the east side of the Hassayampa River with a static lift of 115 feet. This additional lift permitted the entire canal location east of the Hassayampa River to be revised to bypass the urban developments north of Phoenix. Due to the higher location, a power drop with 94 feet of head was added at the Agua Fria River, through which water deliveries to the area west of the river would be made. The Granite Reef aqueduct is designed for uniform flow throughout 11 months of the year to minimize the size of the aqueduct required. The plan provides that only that portion of the water needed in the Salt River Valley would be delivered at Granite Reef.
