Memorandum Report - Lower Colorado River Project

A provisional population estimate, released by the U.S. Census Bureau for the approximate 2-year period, April 1960 to July 1962, showed that the increase in growth of this area remains well above the national average. Nevada's population had grown by 17.3 percent to lead the Nation, and Arizona was second with a 15.9 percent increase. The growth of the seven States of the Colorado River Basin was just less than 11 percent, while the growth of the rest of the contiguous States of the Nation, except Florida, showed increases of generally less than 5 percent. The United States Senate Select Committee on National Water Resources, acting pursuant to Senate Resolution 48 of the 86th Congress, 2d Session, published a series of reports under the caption "Water Resources Activities in the United States," with several subtitles. Print No. 14 of this report, entitled "Future Needs for Reclamation in the Western States," was prepared by the Bureau of Reclamation. In Chapter III, it is estimated that the Nation's population can be expected to double within the next 50 years, and that the growth rate of the 17 Reclamation States will continue to exceed the national average. In Chapter III, it is also estimated that the present population (April 1960) of the 17 Western States of 43 million would reach 108 million in the year 2000, with the growth varying from region to region.
