The elements involved are lining of the Coachella main canal, All-American Canal, and Gila Valley gravity canals; river regulation by offstream storage; a program of recovery of ground-water return flows, and channilization. Also included are water reclamation facilities necessary to make possible the reuse of the increasing quantities of sewage effluent return flows that occur in the major metropolitan areas. Water from this source could be used primarily for direct application to irrigation uses, and ground water basin recharge but could eventually be processed to a potable quality. Salt Water Conversion Division--Increasing emphasis by private and governmental groups is being placed on devising methods for the extraction of salts from sea and brackish waters to produce potable water at an aconomical cost. The Department of the Interior, through its office of Saline Water will invest up to $60 million in the next four years in an accalerating program to develop new or improved saline water conversion processes. In the ten years the Department has been sponsoring saline water conversion research substantial progress has been achieved. Fresh water production plants ranging up to about 4 acre-feet per day, utilining several types of processes are in operation throughout the Nation.
