Since the initiation of pumping at Wellton-Mohawk, the drainage system in the Mexicali Valley has not been able to carry off all of the heavy salt concentrations in the water. Inasmuch as the District is snnually pumping 45,000 acre-feet more than is neceseary to maintain hydraulic balance, a reduction by this amount would not impair the District. Technical investigations show that the water table has been reducted to 6 feet or more through-out the District. A Bureau of Reclamation proposal for a reduc-tion of 20,000 acre feet is inadequate. A reduction of 20,000 acre feet is possible and this would reduce the salinity to 1,800 ppm, but this drainage would have to be pumped out during the following summer. A reduction of 45,000 acre-feet in pumping would do serious injury to the District. 2. The salinity of the water could probably be reduced to a level which Mexico would acoept by the release of about 300,000 acre feet of water from storage.
