THE POWELL SURVEY, 1869-1873 The first recorded exploration of the Colorado River through Glen Canyon was accomplished by John Wesley Powell during the course of his two voyages of discovery in 1869 and 1871. On the 1869 trip Powell applied the name Mound Canyon to the length of canyon stretching from the mouth of the Dirty Devil to the mouth of the San Juan, and the name Monument Canyon to the length extending from the San Juan to the mouth of the Paria River or Lee's Ferry.
