more of these resources and, belatedly, room in which to fish and hunt. Some of the facilities and installations developed and managed are single-purpose in nature expressly designed for bettering particular fish and wildlife environments, but many more are ancillary to other purposes wherein fish and wildlife habitat is important but essentially a by-product of projects built for such other purposes. In the first category are fishing lakes developed with state fish and game funds primarily for fishing. In the second are the many multiple-purpose reservoirs impounded for the primary purposes of providing municipal and irrigation water, generating hydroelectric power, regulating river regimens, controlling floods, and similar other purposes. Augmenting the efforts at managing and improving habitat for fish and wildlife are such facilities as Federal and state fish hatcheries and state game farms. The output of such installations fills the propagative needs for stocking and replenishing depleted areas with fish and wildlife. A brief analysis of the various fish and wildlife installations, revealing the scope and the complementary nature of the programs of the agencies is of interest. State Installations Arizona In recent years, the Arizona Game and Fish Department has spent more than $1,500,000 acquiring, developing, and improving 15 lakes providing over 1,862 acres of fishing water. In some of the water-short parts of the state, it has been considered worthwhile to spend nearly $5,000 per surface acre to develop such waters. In addition, Arizona maintains three trout hatcheries. They are the Sterling Springs, Page Springs, and Tonto installations, all located in the north-central part of the State. These units produce a total of 235,000 pounds of trout per year. Through purchase, lease and agreement, Arizona actively manages 17 wildlife management areas totalling 27,357 acres. This acreage includes 6 of the fishing lakes totaling 612 acres previously mentioned since these areas serve two purposes.
