of the Gila River by having the symbol "4F" placed after the mapping symbol. A large number of soil samples were taken during the classification and total dissolved solids and pH analyses were made. A large percentage of the valley land was placed in Class 6 due to the high salinity, which was greater than the maximum allowance of 0.5 of 1 percent for Class 2 lands. After the re-authorization of the Gila Project in July 1947, the Bureau of Reclamation conducted a detailed land classification on the same areas covered by the 1941 classification. Full work on this survey was carried on during 1947 and 1948. In this classification, land Classes 1 through 4 were mapped as arable land; however, Class 4 land was designated as a limited arable class, dependent on the correction of the high saline condition. A total of 17,585.6 acres was included in this class. The results of this classification were published in the report titled "Land Classification Report, Wellton-Mohawk Division, Gila Project, Arizona," date July 1948. At the request of the Special Task Force Committee appointed by the President of the United States, a soil-sampling program was initiated on the valley land of the Wellton-Mohawk Division of the Gila Project by Bureau of Reclamation personnel. This work was started the week of April 2, 1962, with the selection of 51 sites which were representative of both developed and nondeveloped lands. Duplicate composite samples to a depth of six feet were collected for laboratory analyses of soluble salts.
