This paper discusses the possibility of using knowledge management tools in the academic collaborative environments that spread across nations. The paper presents the benefits of using knowledge management tools for enhancing the collaborative environment in such academic research, and presents a possible customization of the existing knowledge management tools to arrive at an architecture for such a scenario. The work attempts to resolve that the knowledge management, if appropriately used, will serve as a strong foundation to foster innovation and knowledge creation in universities and among the academia
