In this work, beside practical considerations including definition of the control groups, random assignment of animals to control/treatment groups, determination of the number of animals needed for each group and identification of the most appropriate statistical analysis, the effectiveness of animal models in providing biological information at the molecular level that can be actually translated to the human subject and the intrinsic limitations of this approach will be discussed by using different examples of experimental tracers
