The levels and dimensions of income inequality in Africa are heterogeneous, with varying degrees of intensity, diversity and drivers. Since 1990, income inequality trends in the continent have been multi-dimensional, exhibiting a rising, a falling, a U-shaped, or an inverted U-shaped (∩) trends.1 These variations emphasise the importance of achieving a deeper understanding of each of these trends in Africa towards identifying key drivers and to offer policy recommendations for the countries associated with each trend. Focusing on specific drivers of progress on income inequality allows for a clear understanding of why some countries make significant progress while others lag behind.
