This article presents newly developed national estimates of average income, per farm and per person in the farm family, for each economic class of farm in 1949. Aggregates and averages of farm income and expenditures are published regularly in considerable detail in The Farm Income Situation. Breakdowns are provided by regions and States and also in such terms as individual commodities and commodity groups, money and nonmoney income, and the various types of expenditures. But historical data by economic class of farm are not available to permit analyses of income trends on commercial farms on the one hand and noncommercial farms on the other.
