Biography of Charlie Crow Eagle - Blackfoot (Piikani): Born in 1871, Charlie Crow Eagle was a well known farmer, rancher, council member, medicine man and a chief by hereditary chiefdom from his father, Old Man Crow Eagle. Although it is unknown whether Nicholas de Grandmaison sketched his portrait, they were dear friends, and Charlie Crow Eagle conducted the ceremony to recognize de Grandmaison as an honorary member of the Piikani Nation. Supposedly on his death bed, Charlie Crow Eagle expressed to de Grandmaison's widow Sonia: "I'd like to be there with him again." Biography of Sacred Owl/Natoi'sepisto - Blackfoot (Piikani): Born in 1887, Sacred Owl suffered a stroke at the age of 10 and could only communicate through Indigenous sign language. His other names include Gopher and Yellow Horse, as well as the nickname Muki'na. Nicholas de Grandmaison sketched a pastel drawing of him in 1942. Biography of Blue Wings/Otska'inima - Blackfoot (Kainai): Born in 1870, Blue Wings took part in several raids as a young man, capturing five horses. Four years prior to Nicholas de Grandmaison creating his portrait, Blue Wings owned between 300 and 400 horses. This portrait was sketched in 1957, a year before Blue Wings death in 1958. Biography of Wolf Tail/Apisoh'soyi - Blackfoot (Piikani): Born in 1872, Wolf Tail was a leading doctor and herbalist on the Piegan Reserve. While working as an Indian Department Employee, he was one of the fourteen men who were persuaded by the Canadian government to sign a document authorizing the sale of almost a quarter of the reserve. Although this was meant to increase tribal funds, the men had not been told what they were signing, and despite trying to block the deal, the land was ultimately sold to farmers and speculators. Nicholas de Grandmaison sketched his portrait numerous times including in 1930, 1959 and 1960. Biography of Bull Head/Peta'saukomaupi - Blackfoot (Piikani): Born in 1863, Bull Head was also known as Eagle Young Man. He was from the South Piegan nation in Montana, although lived on the Blood Reserve at Brocket as a child. He was known to be a practical joker and well liked by all who knew him. Biography of Many Guns - Blackfoot (Piikani): Many Guns farmed, worked for the Northwest Mounted Police and attended school in Ontario to learn carpentry. He was able to build many houses on the Piegan reserve because of this. Biography of Cold Weather - Blackfoot (Piikani): Cold Weather was a medicine pipe man, a good drummer, a farmer and performed many ceremonies. Nicholas de Grandmaison sketched his portrait in 1935, which was then used for high quality production prints. Biography of Good Rider/Matso'kitopi - Blackfoot (Piikani): Born in 1879, he was originally known as Double Walker, which changed to Riding a Good Horse and shortened to Good Rider. He was a well-known horse breeder and served on the Tribal Council for twenty years, dying in 1958. Nicholas de Grandmaison drew his portrait in 1940 and 1954. Biography of Big Fist Chief - Blackfoot (Piikani): Big Fist Chief was a well-known medicine man. Biography of Chief Yellow Horn - Blackfoot (Piikani): Born in 1900, John Yellow Horn was known as a great chief who sat for a portrait by Nicholas de Grandmaison during the 1930s. He died in 1983. Biography of Aldred Small Legs/Is He Here?/Ikinai-towa - Blackfoot (Piikani): Born in 1908, Is Here Here? or Aldred Small Legs, was the grandson of head chief Crow Eagle. He was known as a great storyteller and died at the age of seventy.
