This article aims to approximate the emergence and structure of competency-based curriculum design at universities. For this, a descriptive qualitative research is carried out, based on the documentary analysis and the experience carried out by the authors in the curricular design by competences in their respective programs. In conclusion, the emergence of curricular design by competencies from the guidelines of international organizations such as UNESCO is highlighted so that Universities respond to the new challenges of the knowledge society and is formalized with the Bologna declaration and the Structuring of the Educational Space of Education Superior in Europe.
