Richard Lee Holt Sr. letter to his wife Minneford Francis Holt, August 25, 1944

Saturday Afternoon Aug 26th My Dearest One. Well here I am again, I am not in much more of a frame of mind to write than I was yesterday but am going to try it anyway. I did get a letter yesterday tho so that helps some. It was your V mail of the 10th Honey I was afraid that you would get all hoped up if I wrote you that I might get a furlough, so I waited untill I knew for certain that I was pretty sure of getting one, but you know how the Army is. I believe that I told you in one of my later letters that there was some outfits that had been overseas longer than we had so they were sending all of their men first. However I talked to Mr Price, that is our Warrent Officer who handles all the adaminstrative work of the Bn and he tells me that it looks as if we might get another allotement for furlough before very long, so mayb it isnt hopeless, but I will let you know as soon as I find out anything more. But from the sounds of the War news, and from the opinion of all concerned over here it looks as if the War might be over beforelong. I have also noticed in the papers where they are mak- ing plans for releasing soldiers. Of course I relize that they must be prepared to meet any thing that comes up, but it dose seem that they are looking for a change soon. Well old august will soon be gone. It seems that the months go by so fast and yet time drags. We have been overseas a year and five days, that is counting XXX from the time we left New York. So much has happ- ened sinc that time that it dosent seem possiable. We came all the way accross Africa, and now are a long ways on our way accross Italy. I look for thing to move along pretty fast once we get to moving again. Boy the boys in France are sure going to town. It begins to look as if the jerries meant what they said, when they made the statement that they would get the Americans in Germany first if they had to furnish trans- portation for them themselves. Of course the people of the underground in France have been helping a lot; We had a little fun yesterday even but it dident last very long. Old Jerry apparently dident like our being so close to him and tried to run us off, but he dident have much luck we soon found out where they were and gave them some of their own medi- cine and a lot more of it, so we havent heard from them any more. Here I am about two thirds of the way down a sheet of paper and all run down. But guess I will try and think of something to say to fill in the space. Well I just got a little help, we have a fire mission and now I am wondering what it will be, well it dosent look as it they were going to shoot for some time so will go ahead ad finish this. The cake I told you we were going to have for dinner yesterday sure did turn out good. It was deviles food, and even tho I dont as a rule like them I ate my share of it. Honey I cant think of anything more so guess I will sign off for this time. I dident get any mail today, but am looking for one tomorrow. I love you with all my heart Sweetheart; Le
