Felipe Poey y los estudios sobre la ciguatera

The figure of José Felipe Poey is analyzed as one of the great Cuban naturalists who worked in many fields of knowledge in the nineteenth century. The article focusses on his work in ichthyology in Cuba and is divided into two parts. In the first, the author refers to Poey's study of ciguatera, an illness caused by human ingestion of toxic fish and describes the fish that cause the illness, the number of species, the symptoms, precautions and treatment. Data is given on the toxic species, based on the knowledge of other naturalists like Antonio Parra who had studied this subject. Poey's interest in philology in his analysis of the origin of the work «ciguatera» is also discussed. The second part is concerned with fishing regulations in force in Cuba in his lifetime and gives his opinions on legal aspects of this «Fisheries police», safeguarding the health of consumers without harming this important industry for the island.Se analiza la figura de José Felipe Poey cómo uno de los grandes naturalistas cubanos que desarrolló sus actividades en muchos campos del saber durante el siglo XIX. El artículo se centra en sus trabajos dentro de la Ictiología cubana y consta de dos partes. En la primera se refiere el autor al estudio que realizó Poey sobre la ciguatera, enfermedad ocasionada por la ingestión humana de pescado tóxico. Describe los peces que producen la enfermedad, el número de especies, los síntomas, las precauciones y los métodos curativos. Aporta datos concretos sobre las especies tóxicas, basándose en los conocimientos anteriores de otros naturalistas que como Antonio Parra se habían preocupado del tema. También se pone de manifiesto el interés que Poey tenía por la Filología al analizar el origen del término «ciguatera». En la segunda parte se preocupa por las normas que regulaban la actividad pesquera que regía en Cuba en su tiempo y muestra sus opiniones en materia legal respecto a esta «Policía de la pesca» velando por la salud de los consumidores sin atentar contra la industria, que este sector económico suponía para la Isla
