BA 30 MD 36.)Dr. Ruth Ellis Lesh (1910-1983) was a well-respected physician and pioneer for women in the medical field. Notable positions she held included a position as the first female officer and vice president of the Arkansas Medical Society, president of the Washington County Medical Society, medical director for the United States Public Health Service Reserves, and a founding fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. In 1989 Dr. Ruth established a scholarship for senior female students at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) whose primary interest was in surgery.
