Although there is limited research concerning the environmental hazards in Manhattan’s subway network, undoubtably this is an important area of study for a number of reasons. The three justifications I believe demonstrate the importance of this topic are the durability of the system and the negative impact on human health and the environment. Millions of people riding the subway on a daily basis without a doubt prioritizes durability of the system. Air pollutants and excessive heat are indicators that there are underlying concerns with the functionality of the system and how durable it is.
