This article analyses the different attempts to reform the taxation system on the island of Cuba throughout the 19th century. The hypothesis it upholds is that Cuba, instead of being fiscally sustained by the metropolis, as was the case with the British colonies in the Caribbean, did the opposite, ie. it contributed to mitigating Spain’s taxation difficulties. For this reason, it had to adopt earlier and deeper tax reforms than those adopted in Spain. Furthermore, its population suffered a tax burden significantly greater than that of the Spanish population.
