Conclusiones: Los bárbaros y Roma: ¿Mito-motor explicativo o paradigma necesario?

The history of the barbarians* is, as we point out in the title of this work, a history forged between myth and reality, since our image of the barbarian people* is, without a doubt, one of the most recurrent myth-motors in historiography. Barbarians*, whether in a strictly scientific or popular context, are attributed all kinds of mostly pejorative connotations. This image, let's say it without any qualms, negative of the barbaric* people, is not a construction of recent historiography, but already from antiquity the barbarian (the 'foreigner' to the Greek-Roman world) was seen as a savage, uncivilized, almost genetically carrier of all imaginable evils. Such common expressions as 'he is a barbarian*', 'he is a vandal*', 'acts of vandalism', 'this is a barbarity', etc., we repeat them continuously in our daily life and never with a positive meaning, if not the contrary. In doing so, we are reproducing clichés and clichés that are lost in the night of time and yet they are still as fictitious as they are empty of content. The image that Rome, through the Greek and/or Roman authors, has offered of the barbarians* has contributed to this. A completely unrealistic, imaginary, mythical vision, realized from the most absolute ignorance of how they were, how they lived and who those barbaric* people who inhabited the barbaricum* really were.La de los bárbaros* es, como señalamos en el título de este trabajo, una historia forjada entre el mito y la realidad, puesto que nuestra imagen sobre las gentes* barbarae constituye, sin duda, uno de los mitos-motores más recurrentes en la historiografía. A los bárbaros*, ya sea en un contexto estrictamente científico o popular, se les adjudica todo tipo de connotaciones mayoritariamente peyorativas. Esta imagen, digámoslo sin reparo, negativa de las gentes* barbarae, no es una construcción de la historiografía reciente, sino que ya desde la Antigüedad el bárbaro (el ‘extranjero’ al mundo greco-romano) era visto como un salvaje, incivilizado, portador quasi genéticamente de todos los males imaginables. Expresiones tan corrientes como ‘es un bárbaro*’, ‘es un vándalo*’, ‘actos vandálicos’, ‘esto es una barbaridad’, etc., las repetimos continuamente en nuestra vida cotidiana y nunca con un significado positivo, si no todo lo contrario. Haciéndolo, estamos reproduciendo tópicos y clichés que se pierden en la noche de los tiempos y que, sin embargo, no dejan de ser tan ficticios como vacíos de contenido. A ello ha contribuido la imagen que Roma, a través de los autores griegos y/o romanos, ha ofrecido de los bárbaros*. Una visión completamente irreal, imaginaria, mítica, y realizada desde el desconocimiento más absoluto de cómo eran, cómo vivían y quiénes eran verdaderamente esas gentes* barbarae que habitaban el barbaricum*
