La cueva y su interpretación en el cristianismo primitivo

This article studies the cave as a primitive Christian symbol for the complementary opposition between death and life, and as the symbol of physical and spiritual regeneration. The Christian recognition of the cave as such soon appears linked to the Messiah's birth and to the identifi cation of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, as fertile earth. Her womb is precisely the symbol of the cave. Christ's resurrection doesn't avoid the symbolization of the cave as a place of regeneration; this idea is widely expressed in the iconography. But the Christian concept of caves must be understood in relation to the wider Christian image of Nature as the eternal expression of God's will. This relationship of the cave and of Nature as whole is present in the very first phase of monasticism and in the origins of rock monasticism.Este artículo se ocupa de la cueva como símbolo cristiano primitivo de la oposición complementaria entre muerte y vida, así como lugar de la regeneración física y espiritual. La interpretación cristiana de la cueva aparece tempranamente vinculada al nacimiento del Mesías y a la identificación de la Virgen Madre de Dios con la tierra fértil, y del útero de ésta precisamente con la cueva. La Resurrección de Cristo tampoco escapa al simbolismo de la cueva como lugar de regeneración, idea que aparece ampliamente representada en la iconografía. Pero la interpretación cristiana de la cueva debe entenderse desde la visión general más amplia, que tiene el cristianismo sobre la Naturaleza como manifestación permanente de la voluntad de Dios. Semejante concepción, no ya de la cueva, sino de la práctica totalidad de la naturaleza, está presente desde las fases más tempranas del movimiento anacorético y se encuentra en el origen del monacato rupestre
