SOSTENIBILIDAD DE USOS DEL AGUA EN EL TERRITORIO FRONTERA DE LOS ANTIGUOS REINOS DE GRANADA Y MURCIA

In arid environments of the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, such as the border betweenthe province of Murcia and Almería, aquifers near the surface are exploited in a variety of ways. These can be regarded as models of sustainable development, given the way they operate. More specifically, here we mention two main types. Firstly, the draining galleries of the ‘qanat-s» type, which are known as «galleries with lumbreras» in the border between the former kingdoms of Granada and Murcia. Secondly, those that exploit the aquifers associated to the beds of Mediterranean watercourses and dry rivers by building dams below them. Some of these systems can be traced back to the sixteenth century and nowadays they are still operational, thus obtaining good-quality water to cater for the needs of this area.En medios áridos del Sureste de la Península Ibérica, como el espacio de contacto entre las provincias de Murcia y Almería, existen toda una serie de aprovechamientos de freáticos próximos a la superficie, que en su funcionamiento pueden ser considerados modelos de desarrollo sostenible. Nos referimos a las galerías drenantes de tipo "qanat-s", conocidas en esta frontera entre los antiguos reinos de Granada y Murcia como "galerías con lumbreras" y a las asociadas a presas subálveas que captan los freáticos de ramblas y ríos-ramblas mediterráneos. Algunos de estos sistemas tienen más de 500 años de antigüedad, y mantienen su funcionalidad en el siglo XXI produciendo agua de calidad para atender las demandas de este ámbito regional
