ESPAÑA EN EL SAHARA OCCIDENTAL: DE UNA CONOLIZACION TARDÍA A UNA DESCOLONIZACION INCONCLUSA, 1885-1975

This article offers a synthesis of Spain’s action in the Western Sahara desert, from the moment the Spanish Protectorate over the coast comprised between Bojador Cape and the West Bay was proclaimed to 1975 with the tripartite agreement and the desertion of the territory. In these pages the causes that motivated the late colonization of the territory (in fact, it took Spaniards forty-eight years to begin the occupation of the Sahara as a whole) will be analyzed, as well as the ups and downs that led into the unfi nished decolonization, leaving behind a territorial dispute which not only remains, but is also far from a defi nite solution.En este artículo se ofrece una síntesis de la acción de España en el Sáhara occidental, desde el mismo momento en que se proclama el «protectorado» español sobre la costa comprendida entre cabo Bojador y Bahía del Oeste, hasta el acuerdo tripartito de 1975 y su abandono del territorio como potencia administradora. A través de sus páginas se analizan las causas que motivaron la colonización tardía del territorio (pasaron cuarenta y ochos años antes de que se iniciara la ocupación del Sahara en su conjunto), así como los avatares que desembocaron en una descolonización inconclusa, dejando latente tras de si un contencioso territorial en la región que no sólo perdura en el tiempo, sino que está lejos de encontrar una solución definitiva
