EL ISLAM, LAS VIÑETAS DANESAS Y LA ALIANZA DE CIVILIZACIONES

The Alliance of Civilizations proposed by the Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in 2004, co-sponsored by the governments of Turkey and Spain and endorsed by the United Nations, seeks to address the rift between the Western and Muslim societies. That rift manifested itself in the Muhammad’s cartoons crisis of early 2006. This article analyses both the debate on that crisis in the Spanish press and the fi nal report of the Alliance of Civilizations High-Level Group in order to clarify some fundamental issues in the relations between Western and Muslim societies.La Alianza de Civilizaciones propuesta por el jefe del gobierno español José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero en 2004, patrocinada conjuntamente por los gobiernos de Turquía y España y asumida por las Naciones Unidas, se propone colmar el foso existente entre las sociedades occidentales y musulmanas. Ese foso se manifestó en la crisis de las viñetas de Mahoma a comienzos de 2006. Este artículo analiza tanto el debate sobre esa crisis en la prensa española como el informe fi nal del Grupo de Alto Nivel de la Alianza de Civilizaciones, con el objetivo de aclarar algunas cuestiones fundamentales en las relaciones entre las sociedades occidentales y musulmanas
