Democracia y revolución:: una convivencia compleja. El caso uruguayo.

The aim of this article is to understand the relationship between the Latin American Revolutionary Left Wing in the sixties and seventies and the two topics this monograph is concerned with: democracy and authoritarianism. It will attempt to analyze the vision that the Left Wing had of democracy and the prevailing political systems as well as indirectly considering authoritarianism. Firstly we will try to understand the dichotomy involved between democracy and revolution, as throughout the left we find a common ideological base inherited from the Cuban Revolution and its resulting political-ideological set up, which is the fundamental basis when considering both the overall topic and also the individual aspects. Secondly, we will focus on the MLN-T in Uruguay, a paradigmatic example of the matters in question due to its revolutionary proposals - adapted to its national circumstances, its singularity within the continent given the country's tradition and democratic solidarity up to the end of the sixties and for its consequent evolution - it reorganized itself politically after the revolution, giving up its weapons and forming part of the electoral - democratic system. As a result, it gained its greatest success by becoming the dominating force in the Uruguayan left with the election of one of its old members, José Mújica, to the presidency in 2009.El objetivo de este artículo es comprender la relación de la izquierda revolucionaria latinoamericana de los años sesenta y setenta con los dos ejes en los que se centra este monográfico: democracia y autoritarismo. Tratará de analizar la visión que aquella izquierda tenía de la democracia y los sistemas políticos vigentes, e indirectamente abordará la cuestión del autoritarismo. En primer lugar intentaremos comprender la dicotomía planteada entre democracia y revolución, dado que en toda aquella izquierda hubo una base ideológica común heredada de la revolución cubana y de la elaboración político-ideológica resultante de ella, y que es punto de partida fundamental para la comprensión tanto del tema en sentido amplio como en relación a cualquier caso particular. En segundo lugar, nos centraremos en el MLN-T uruguayo, ejemplo paradigmático de las cuestiones abordadas: por su propuesta revolucionaria, derivada de aquel pensamiento y adaptada a sus circunstancias nacionales; por su singularidad en el continente dada la tradición y solidez democrática del país hasta fines de los años sesenta; y por su evolución posterior, pues se reorganizó políticamente tras la dictadura, renunció a la lucha armada y se integró a la competencia democrático-electoral, alcanzando a través de ella su máximo éxito al ser la fuerza dominante dentro de la izquierda uruguaya que llevará a uno de sus viejos militantes, José Mujica, a la presidencia del país en el año 2009
