LA ENTREVISTA DE CARGA DEL CUIDADOR. UTILIDAD Y VALIDEZ DEL CONCEPTO DE CARGA

The purpose of this project was to identify the underlying dimensions of the burden concept just as it is assessed by The Burden Interview (Zarit and Zarit, 1983), as well as to set up the relationships between the identified dimensions and external criteria which are implied in the caregiving of functional dependent elderly. These processes of identification and analysis allowed to replace the burden concept into a wider conceptual framework. The sample consisted of 62 caregivers and 45 of their care-recipients. Besides the caregiver burden other variables were assessed, diferent aspects of burden stressors (time of caregiving, quality of the relationship between caregiver and care-recipient, functional capacity, mental state and behavioral problems of the care.recipient) and some of the effects of the caregiving situation on caregiver=s well-being (perceived health, use of the health system services, subjective satisfaction). Results showed diferent relationships between three underlying dimensions of caregiver=s burden (cargiving impact, interpersonal burden and autoeficacy expectatives) and some external criteria, revealing the multidimensional nature of the burden in the same way other researchers had pointed out. The analysis of these results and bearing in mind the theorical model of stress point out the necessity to overcome important theorical and methodological deficiencies of the burden concept.Este trabajo pretende identificar las dimensiones subyacentes al concepto de carga del cuidador -aplicado a persona mayores dependientes- evaluado a través de la Entrevista de Carga del Cuidador (Zarit y Zarit, 1983), sus relaciones con criterios externos asociados al cuidado, así como situar el concepto de carga en un marco teórico. La muestra estaba compuesta por 62 cuidadores de personas mayores dependientes y 45 personas receptoras de los cuidados de estos últimos. Se evalúan, además de la carga del cuidador, diversos aspectos referentes a estresores del cuidado (tiempo de cuidado y calidad de la relación cuidador-persona cuidada, capacidad funcional, estado mental y problemas de conducta de la persona que recibe los cuidados), así como efectos del cuidado sobre el cuidador (salud percibida, utilización de los servicios de salud y bienestar subjetivo). Los resultados muestran la presencia de tres dimensiones subyacentes a la carga del cuidador (impacto de cuidado, carga interpersonal y expectativas de autoeficacia) que se asocian diferencialmente con los criterios externos seleccionados, mostrando así que la carga, tal como se ha planteado en las investigaciones sobre cuidadores, es un constructo diverso y multidimensional. También, se analiza a partir de estos resultados la pertinencia del constructo de carga en referencia a los modelos de estrés, concluyéndose que este concepto debe superar importantes deficiencias teóricas y metodológicas
