Objective: Identify the understanding of the nursing team about brain death (BD) and the donation of organs and tissues. Method: Descriptive, quantitative study conducted in six hospitals in Natal/RN with 68 nursing staff. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, realized descriptive analysis and thematic analysis of content. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Results: Of the 68 professionals, 51,5% were nursing technician; 77,9% affirmed feeling prepared to assist patient in BD. Among the criteria for the diagnosis of BD, 94,1% cited absence of brain activity detects by complementary exams.
