Early decades of the 19th century were an important time for the European thought, for it was rediscovering the works of e.g. Johann Gottfried Herder. It was also at that time when reflection about terms like culture and civilisation took roots on the Polish ground. It is visible, e.g. in the proposals of Jędrzej Śniadecki or Joachim Lelewel. The conditions in the partitioned Polish lands also led to shaping the thought concerning the meaning of the term “nation.” Questions about the nature of this term, as well as seeking answers (theoretical and practical) concerning the ways of building a sense of national belonging, were encouraged.
