Lógica esclavista y resistencia negra en los Andes ecuatorianos a finales del siglo XVIII

The article examines a series of revolts which broke out at the end of the eighteenth century in the sugar-cane plantations of the Chota river valley in the north of present Ecuador. When the Department of Temporalities sold these Jesuit plantations, the new owners tried to sell part of the slaves in order to increase productivity and doubtless to obtain some cash. This more went against the desire of the slaves not to be separated from their families and homes, and provoted increasingly serous conflicts, at the same time as the slaves questioned their condition in general terms.Se analizan una serie de disturbios ocurridos a finales del siglo XVIII en las haciendas cañeras del valle del río Chota en el norte de la actual república del Ecuador. Cuando estas haciendas jesuitas fueron vendidas por la administración de las Temporalidades, los nuevos dueños intentaron vender parte de los esclavos con miras a una mayor productividad y sin duda para conseguir liquidez. Tal política chocó con la voluntad de los esclavos de no ser separados de sus familiares y de su entorno. de ahí enfrentamientos cada vez más graves que se han de relacionar también con un cuestionamiento más general de la esclavitud por los mismos afectados
