Los dos autores viajeros, Pierre Loti (1850 - 1923) y Edward Morgan Forster (1879 - 1970) vivieron la modernización de Europa y la expansión colonial, pero frente a este período de cambio y de confianza en el progreso de Occidente, Loti y Forster, entre otros autores, encontraron otras realidades en Oriente a través de sus viajes a la India, que dieron fruto a L’Inde (Sans les Anglais) (1903) de Loti, y A Passage to India (1924) de Forster.
