This chapter focuses upon populations of women who are of low socioeconomic status (SES), and/or have typically lower levels of engagement with physical activity and sport. As such, we examine a diverse population of women and girls who have not necessarily been represented in the other chapters of this book. First, this chapter provides a literature review as a means of establishing a background and context, before turning to examine the concept of ‘low SES’ in relation to sport and physical activity among women. Following this, the barriers to engagement in sport among low SES and underserved communities of women are discussed, and research issues and opportunities are considered.
