Positive behaviour support for people with autism spectrum disorders : occupational therapy's valuable contribution

Introduction: Occupational Therapists are an essential part of any multi-disciplinary team supporting someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Traditionally, occupational therapists have been primarily concerned with promoting quality of life, participation and engagement in occupation. However, concern is mounting that occupational therapists working with those with autism may be too narrowly concerned with only sensory aspects of a person’s behaviour. Occupational therapists may have mixed levels of confidence when working with people with ASD and challenging behaviour. Work with challenging behaviours which affect quality of life is often left to other disciplines. Objectives: This presentation will build capacity in occupational therapists working with children with ASD and challenging behaviour. Participants will gain an understanding of the evidence based framework around Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) and how to integrate this into their current occupational therapy practice with people with ASD. Approach: Evidence based PBS components have been compiled into a practical presentation for occupational therapists to expand their practice knowledge and skills in relation to PBS for people with ASD. Practice implications: PBS that is a family and person centred approach which changes behaviour, promotes participation and quality of life and fits well within occupational therapy practice for people with ASD. Best practice occupational therapy with ASD and challenging behaviour considers the whole person, evaluates abilities, teaches skills systematically and adapts features of his/ her autism and the environment to promote positive outcomes. Conclusion: PBS is a valuable knowledge and practice area for occupational therapists working with people with ASD
