Structural performance of self-compacting concrete

To date, the majority of research studies conducted on the self-compacting concrete (SCC), also known as self-consolidating concrete, has concentrated on its rheological properties with non-evident reference to its actual applications in structural engineering projects. This chapter aims at providing the readers with applications of SCC in design and construction of precast and cast-in-place concrete structures as well as repair and strengthening of existing ones. It is first explained what makes SCC a suitable construction material for structures that are of innovative design, architecturally complex, and/or constructionally challenging. Then, the chapter discusses the outcomes of recent investigations into the efficacy of SCC in performance enhancement of structural components of bridges, buildings, other structures. Finally, several case studies are presented along with the lessons learned from the application of SCC in those studies
