Neoliberal globalization, unions and labour movement strategies

Book review of Labor Movements: Global Perspectives by Stephanie Luce; If We Can Win Here: The New Front Lines of the Labor Movement by Fran Quigley and Bread, Freedom, Social Justice: Workers and the Egyptian Revolution by Anne Alexander and Mostafa Bassiouny. Several intersecting problems of labour movement organization permeate these three books. Overall, they demonstrate how the international spread of neoliberal policies and the accompanying proliferation of low-paid, insecure emoployment has generated very similar challenges for workers and unions cross-nationally. Each examines within different contexts how campaigns for worker demands might be conducted through both union and non-union channels. They all describe labour movement strategies to construct viable, democratic alternatives to neoliberal globalization. This essay assesses their respective strategies within each context, exploring any wider conclusions and implications
