Effect of occupational therapy interventions on instrumental activities of daily living performance among older adults with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia : a systematic review

Introduction: Older adults may experience deterioration in cognition which impacts independence in day-to-day activities. These adults decline in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) prior to losing their ability in more basic activities of daily living. To date, there has been no systematic review of existing literature to determine effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions which target IADL performance in this population. Objective: To identify and evaluate occupational therapy interventions targeted at maintaining or improving IADL performance in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or mild dementia. Method: A systematic search of six databases was conducted. Studies which reported randomised control trials detailing interventions targeting performance in IADL in older adults were included. Data extraction and review was completed according to the PRISMA checklist. Practical Implications: Community-based living is a current government initiative to support healthy ageing. Facilitating performance in instrumental activities of daily living is one strategy to aid successful community-based living. The results of this review will guide occupational therapists to select appropriate interventions for older adults living with MCI or mild dementia, potentially improving the quality of life of these individuals and reducing the need for additional care and health services. Conclusion: This review will be the first to examine the effectiveness of occupational therapy interventions on IADL performance in this group of older adults. The presentation will provide guidance to occupational therapists about how to best support occupational participation in these domains
