The preparation of alumina by dissolution of Bauxite in sodium hydroxide followed by precipitation, is the industrial process known as the Bayer process. Bayer humic material is that organic material in solution when crude Bauxite is dissolved. Although organics in Bayer liquors are normally monitored by gas chromatography, only small molecules (<1000 Daltons) can be analysed at the molecular level by this method. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in principle could be developed to analyse larger molecules.
