This chapter outlines the purpose of this book and provides a structure for negotiating the various chapters. While the goal of efforts to improve teaching is always to improve student learning outcomes, attaining this goal is not easy. In the process of seeking to improve, a teacher must develop a collegial relationship with a range of communities that contribute to the teacher’s development. This book arose from a particular community that has grown around the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics and its regular international conference. The chapters presented in the following sections are offered as a contribution to meeting the goal
