There has been little exploration of how face may be used or misused in education settings, nor examination of the effect that face may have on the process and outcomes of teaching and learning. Face is important to recognise, understand and manage in the higher education environment, as it may impact the attitudes, behaviours, wellbeing and performance of both students and staff. Further, as universities become more global in reach and scope, both students and academics are being required to operate effectively in a multicultural learning environment. Understanding face and other factors that are, in part, culturally determined may enhance learning and ensure that it occurs as harmoniously as possible
