The post-Second World War period saw the conclusion of a number of very significant legal instruments that set out to codify the fundamental rights and freedoms that underpin international human rights law. The ‘twin covenants’, which incorporate into treaty form the principles set out in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, were being negotiated – sometimes quite fiercely – at the same time that the ‘space race’ began and the most important rules of space law were developing.
