Cultural Transfers: France and Britain in the Long Eighteenth Century

The present volume attempts to provide a more integrated investigation of the question, going farther than a series of snapshots of particular individuals or cases by looking at the more concrete reality of the contacts between these two countries and at the functioning of the different channels of communication. The aim is to investigate more closely not just the intellectual contacts between Britain and France but the concrete form they took, including the factors determining which works were translated or reviewed in journals and the material and political constraints under which those who acted as intermediaries between the two countries worked. It seeks to go beyond the leading figures who usually dominate studies of this kind to look in particular at the more practical aspects of these Franco-British exchanges: at the networks which facilitated them, at the individuals at the heart of these networks, and at their activities such as publishing, journalism and translation
