The Australian construction industry over the last four decades has been dominated by the use of reinforced concrete construction, particularly when multi-storey buildings are concerned. The use of structural steel in multi-storey buildings in design and construction is thereby the exception rather than the rule. When structural steel has been adopted it has therefore required much innovation and many of the applications have involved significant advancements often requiring solutions that are pushing the frontiers of knowledge beyond existing international codes of practice.
