This special issue of Global Media Journal – Australian Edition arose from a well-subscribed session at the Australian Anthropological Society Conference in 2012. Our explicit purpose in organising that panel – and this special issue – was to invite scholars to think about and discuss the material communicative basis of social interactions and the ways these shape and are shaped by an always-changing, ever-expanding range of technologies
